Port Talbot

Port Talbot was named after the Talbot family, local landowners who were principle sponsors in 1839 of the docks at the village of Aberafan. At its peak in 1923, over 3 million tons of coal passed through Port Talbot. Extensive ironworks are also situated there, because of the port, and the Abbey Works became one of Europe's largest steelworks, and Wales' largest employer.
