In 1215 Wellington became a town under royal charter and during the middle Ages expanded as a centre for trade from Bristol to Exeter. After a fire broke out in 1731, Major rebuilds took place and later became the centre for cloth-making. Fox, Fowler and Company were founded in wellington and were the last commercial bank in England and wales permitted to print their own sterling bank notes. Despite wellingtons small size it has been historically notable for extravagant churches, including a Quaker meeting house.
