North Petherton is a small town and civil parish located on the edge of the Quantocks and dating back to the 10th century. It was an important settlement during Saxon times but only became a town in the late 20th century.

One of the most prominent features of the town is the Minster Church of St Mary the Virgin, with a tower claimed by many to be the tallest in the West Country. The Grade I listed building is mainly of 15th century origin.

The Alfred Jewel, believed to have been owned by Alfred the Great was found at Petherton Park, North Petherton in 1693 only four miles from the location where he was allegedly burnt at the stakes.
