Richmond lies on the River Swale, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. A major tourist attraction is Richmond Castle in the centre of the town, built as part of the Norman Conquest. Richmond’s cobbled market place is said to be the largest in England. The UK’s most complete 18th-century theatre is Richmond’s Georgian Theatre Royal which was built in 1788.
The village lends its name to the nearby Richmond Camp (formerly Richmond Garrison). Formerly a prosperous coaching town, Richmond has excellent road links and is located just off the A1 Great North Road. Richmond is home to Richmond Racecourse, where races have been held since 1783. Richmond Racecourse is also home to the largest Sunday Market in the North of England.
