The village and civil parish of Catterick is in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, historically part of the North Riding of Yorkshire. Catterick is surrounded by pretty countryside, and The River Swale lies just west of the village. Catterick is close to lakes formed from historic quarrying. Arkengarthdale, Swaledale and Wensleydale are all just a few miles away.
The village lends its name to the nearby Catterick Camp (formerly Catterick Garrison). Formerly a prosperous coaching town, Catterick has excellent road links and is located just off the A1 Great North Road. Catterick is home to Catterick Racecourse, where races have been held since 1783. Catterick Racecourse is also home to the largest Sunday Market in the North of England.
