Broadstairs’ name derives from an 11th century flight of steps carved into the chalk cliff which led from the beach up to the shrine of St Mary.

A regular visitor to Broadstairs between 1837 and 1859, Charles Dickens described the town as “Our English Watering Place”. The Dickens House Museum displays items relating to Charles Dickens home and his life in Broadstairs.
