Richmond lies on the River Swale, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. A major tourist attraction is Richmond Castle in the centre of the town, built as part of the Norman Conquest. Richmond's cobbled market place is said to be the largest in England. The UK's most complete 18th century theatre is Richmond's Georgian Theatre Royal which was built in 1788.
