Many interesting buildings exist at Hawes including Gayle Mill, Hawes. The mill building was built in C 1784 for spinning cotton and later used for spinning wool.

The building was converted to a saw mill in the late 19th Century and, the waterwheel replaced by turbines which supplied part of Hawes with its electric light from 1919 to 1948. Hawes’ setting has been used for many TV programmes including the James Herriot where many old buildings of Hawes were used as backdrops.
