In this month’s Property Surveying Newsletter … we look at leasehold changes, examine property theft and find out more about gifting property
The Property Market Monthly Fact File
The property market fact file is a collection of data compiled each month by our Chartered Surveyors and the propertysurveying.co.uk team, reflecting survey data, statistics, trends and information from the property market. This provides a single place where anyone with an interest in UK property can find the information they need.
Proposed changes announced to leasehold flats
Following a plan dropped by the previous government, Labour has announced its intention to ban outright the sale of new leasehold flats in England and Wales by 2029, making commonhold the default tenure.
Leasehold houses will not be affected by the changes.
Make a gift of your family home
While there are some benefits to making a gift of your family home, there are some potential pitfalls of which you should be aware.
Warning over potential for Power of Attorney abuse
Two unmarried brothers, with no children to take over the farm they loved, have been conned into signing over their property by a church minister and local businessman.
Arsonist pets becoming more responsible for fires
Firefighters in North Yorkshire have responded to more incidents involving pets over the past year than to fires triggered by lithium batteries or electric bikes and scooters.
House returned to rightful owner after theft
A clergyman has finally regained possession of his Luton home nearly four years after it was sold without his knowledge, following the eviction of a family living there.
HBF calls for suspension of Building Safety Levy
The Home Builders Federation (HBF) has expressed significant apprehension over the government’s proposed Building Safety Levy. Over 100 housebuilders have jointly signed a letter, in which the HBF terms the levy as “nakedly anti-development.”
Promised £2 billion house building boost
The Chancellor’s first budget resulted in a slowed down economy, tax increases, job losses and extra borrowing with, it seems, more doom and gloom to come as its effects on employers take effect. Six months later, based on the Office for Budget Responsibility’s optimistic view of public finances, the March Spring Statement promised measures to kick start the property market to fulfil the government’s promise of building 1.5 million new homes over the next five years.
And finally …
“Residents’ parking” leaves residents up in arms
Until recently, Tors Road was the only remaining road in the small but busy coastal village of Lynmouth, North Devon, which had no parking restrictions. The council’s solution to the complaint of one person has left other residents unhappy.
