Havering Borough is named after the village of Havering-atte-Bower - a Royal residence dating back to Edward the Confessor. Havering Palace (now gone) was visited by many monarchs, including Henry II and Elizabeth I. The borough was created in 1965 from the districts of Romford and Hornchurch to cover the old Royal Liberty of Havering.
