Bishop's Waltham

Bishop's Waltham is a small town at the head of the River Hamble. Bishop's Waltham Palace was built in Bishop's Waltham in 1135 and destroyed in the English Civil War, and the building's remains are now a scheduled ancient monument. Bishop's Waltham was an Anglo-Saxon village burnt down by invading Danes in 1001 but the population had recovered in time to be recorded in the Domesday Survey of 1086.
