The village of Thurlestone gets its name from an impressive coastal rock formation known as Thurlestone Rock, an arch shaped rock located off the main beach. Previously described in the Domesday book as a manor of 240 acres, the village is now home to a hotel, golf course and a variety of houses and accommodation for residents and tourists.
A reminder of the history of the village can be found in the form of the village Church – a Grade II listed building with a Norman fort and ancient chapel. Excluding the church the next oldest surviving building in Thurlestone is Church House.
