Princetown

Princetown is the site of Dartmoor Prison which was built in 1806 at a cost of £130,000 and at one time had a capacity between 7,000 and 9,000 prisoners. The prison closed in 1816 and remained derelict until 1851, when it was reopened for prisoners serving long sentences. It has since been considerably extended.
