Buckfastleigh Abbey
Buckfastleigh Abbey

Buckfastleigh is a small market town in Devon that can lay claim to having the joint longest place name in England with no repeated letters.

The town grew as a mill town known for its woollen mills and corn and paper mills, however the town centre is now a mix of late 18th to early 20th century buildings and private dwellings, commercial property and public houses many of which have retained their original character.

Buckfast Abbey attracts many tourists to the town and was founded in 1018 by Earl Aylward. It was then dissolved by the order of King Henry VIII in 1539 leaving the buildings to be looted and destroyed and then left to ruin for over 200 years until it was once again occupied.
