Bampton

The small town of Bampton sites amidst beautiful Devon countryside, on the River Batherm and close to Exmoor and the Somerset border. The main route into North Devon between Taunton and South Molton, on which Bampton sits, was replaced by the new North Devon Link Road in 1988. Nowadays, life in Bampton is very much quieter!

Although some of the houses in Bampton are more modern, traditional properties abound in the area, including grand Victorian houses set in spacious grounds. Bampton boasts Roman remains, the 11th Century Norman Bampton Castle, a number of historic churches and over 70 listed properties including 23 farmhouses and 40 other homes and dwellings. Giffords farmhouse and Lower Rill farmhouse, which both date back to 16th Century, are listed, as are three pairs of 1924 semi-detached concrete houses in Bampton's Frog Street that were built based on the principles of the Nissen Hut.

The annual Bampton Fair, which existed prior to its Royal Charter in 1258, is one of the oldest Charter Fairs in the country. One of the seven Celtic churches founded across Exmoor by St Petroc in the 6th Century was in Bampton. The grade I listed church building of St Michael & All Angels dates back to the 13th Century. The church has the only Perkins High Pressure Hot Water Heating System that was installed in 1897 still in use. The 1495 building that is now Exeter Inn, on the outskirts of Bampton, was originally a farmhouse.
