Camber lies behind the sand dunes of the River Rother estuary. Camber Sands is the settlement nearer the beach. Camber used to be a collection of fishing cottages, but grew due to a golf course being opened near Rye in 1894. A rail tramway was built to shuttle golfers to and from Rye station and the Royal William Hotel at Camber.
