A little bit about Eastville

Eastville is a residential district of Bristol that is made up of mostly contemporary buildings. Eastville is home to a well-known park with a small lake; Ernest Bevin suggested that a lake was put into the park as part of a social scheme. Bevin was a well-respected countryman and he later became Minister of Labour under Churchill during the coalition government of World War II. There had been a number of prefabricated houses built in Eastville after the Second World War due to the housing shortage in Britain, but the majority of these have now been demolished so that mixed style housing could be built instead.

Did you know?

In around 400 BC, a surveying tool called a Groma was invented. This tool consisted of a long, vertical staff, with a horizontal cross-piece mounted on it. A plumb line was attached to each end of the cross-piece. It is believed that the Groma originated in Mesopotamia (today's Iraq), imported by the Greeks in 300 BC, and hence taken to Rome.
