Sandwich’s Medieval Buildings
Sandwich was one of the Cinque Ports, lying on the river Stour and lies opposite the older Saxon settlement of Stonar. It is said to be “the most complete medieval town in England”. A preservation order was placed on the town as the layout remains much as it was then, and many of the buildings are 13th century. Indeed, Sandwich has the highest number of listed buildings per capita than any other town in the country including a number of listed public houses an classic buildings such as the Fisher Gate.
Thomas Paine had a home on New Street (listed and marked with a blue plaque). The Earl of Sandwich was created for Sir Edward Montagu, a Naval Commander who brought Charles 2 home following the restoration and MP for Dover.
