{"id":320,"date":"2009-12-24T16:36:56","date_gmt":"2009-12-24T15:36:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk\/newsletter\/?p=320"},"modified":"2009-12-24T16:36:56","modified_gmt":"2009-12-24T15:36:56","slug":"how-the-snow-can-help-you-keep-your-house-warm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk\/newsletter\/?p=320","title":{"rendered":"How the snow can help you keep your house warm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It can seem a contradiction but the snow can help you\u00c2\u00a0keep your house warm.\u00c2\u00a0 This can happen in two ways.<\/p>\n<p>Firstly, a covering of snow can help reduce the wind chill factor from extracting the heat from surfaces that are covered with snow.\u00c2\u00a0 For instance if your roof is covered with 4 inches of snow and say that\u00c2\u00a0the\u00c2\u00a0temperature is -3 degrees and there is a 20 mile an hour wind.\u00c2\u00a0 The\u00c2\u00a0wind chill factor will make the temperature have a cooling affect of about -13 degrees.\u00c2\u00a0 Your roof though thinks that it is only -3 and therefore the level of heat loss is reduced because the differential is reduced.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Secondly, when the temperature rises above freezing, go and have a look at\u00c2\u00a0your roof covered with snow.\u00c2\u00a0 See where the snow melts first.\u00c2\u00a0 Compare this with any neighbours nearby and see which parts of the\u00c2\u00a0roofs lose their snow covering first.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0(You have to consider exposure, aspect and other factors too.)\u00c2\u00a0 These weak points may be due to thermal weak points and show which parts of which roofs need insulating most urgently.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To read other interesting articles on property matters go to the <a title=\"Property Surveying Network\" href=\"http:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk \" target=\"_blank\">propertysurveying<\/a>.co.uk website and click on the link to the Article Archive and Newsletter<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It can seem a contradiction but the snow can help you\u00c2\u00a0keep your house warm.\u00c2\u00a0 This can happen in two ways.
