{"id":4844,"date":"2013-02-11T16:20:13","date_gmt":"2013-02-11T15:20:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk\/newsletter\/?page_id=4844"},"modified":"2013-02-12T13:04:53","modified_gmt":"2013-02-12T12:04:53","slug":"in-case-you-missed-it-jrr-tolkeins-lord-of-the-rings-tower-set-for-refurbishment-project","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk\/newsletter\/?page_id=4844","title":{"rendered":"In case you missed it\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 JRR Tolkein\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Lord of the Rings Tower set for Refurbishment Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A housing provider has recently announced that it will be funding a lengthy restoration project to preserve a tower said to have been the inspiration for one of those imagined by millions in the Lord of the Rings stories. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Trident Reach the People Charity (known simply as \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcReach\u00e2\u20ac\u2122), which provides accommodation and support services for vulnerable people across the Midlands, manages the Grade II listed building, known as Perrott\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Folly. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The building stands eight stories and 96 feet tall in Edgbaston, Birmingham; incorporating 139 stone steps. Each floor is in a different shape and style, with the highlight found at the top: an ornate ceiling featuring Gothic plasterwork that depicts country pursuits such as hunting and farming. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As a folly, its purpose was never as a residence. Built originally by eccentric landowner John Perrott, it is thought that its original purpose was as a hunting lodge to entertain guests and enjoy stunning views across the area. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A more fanciful theory suggests that he used it to spy on his wife when he suspected her of having an affair with the gamekeeper\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Later, in 1884, pioneering glass-maker and meteorologist Abraham Follett Osler began using the building for weather observations. As the Edgbaston Observatory, it became part of one of the world\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s first regular weather forecasting services. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In 2005, Perrott\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Folly Company worked with the Birmingham Conservation Trust to carry out emergency repair works to stabilise the structure and save it from collapse. Now Reach are seeking a further \u00c2\u00a31m to restore the building to its former glory. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As to the Tolkien connection, the author grew up in Birmingham and lived in Stirling Road as a young boy.
