{"id":3294,"date":"2011-11-24T14:50:17","date_gmt":"2011-11-24T13:50:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk\/newsletter\/?page_id=3294"},"modified":"2016-02-03T11:03:27","modified_gmt":"2016-02-03T11:03:27","slug":"further-50m-made-available-for-empty-homes-problem","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk\/newsletter\/?page_id=3294","title":{"rendered":"Further \u00c2\u00a350m made available for empty homes problem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The government has announced an extra \u00c2\u00a350 million of funding for empty homes in areas where it is a particular problem.<\/p>\n<p>The fund is in addition to \u00c2\u00a3100 million for work to improve empty homes previously announced by ministers in October 2010.<\/p>\n<p>The extra money, unveiled as part of the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s housing strategy, is a win for Liberal Democrat ministers who have long championed bringing vacant properties back into use as a way of solving the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s housing shortage.<\/p>\n<p>The \u00c2\u00a350 million will be match funded by local partners to allow councils and landlords to refurbish homes. There will also be a bidding round for community groups to bring properties into use for affordable housing, although there will be no fixed delivery model prescribed. Instead, local needs will be taken into consideration.<\/p>\n<p>Bids for the money will have to prove that the properties have been empty for \u00e2\u20ac\u02dca significant period of time\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 and that they would remain so without extra funding.<\/p>\n<p>The strategy also reiterates the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s promise to allow councils to charge a levy on long-term empty properties first announced by communities minister Andrew Stunell in September.<\/p>\n<p>Added to that, the government is encouraging providers to use the green deal to improve the energy efficiency of properties they bring back into use. The strategy suggests that \u00c2\u00a32 million from the money for the green deal will be used to bring 200 vacant homes into use in this financial year.<\/p>\n<p>There are also plans to revamp empty dwelling management orders early next year to limit their use to the worst empty properties.
