Under the proposed planning reforms, local authorities would be mandated \u2014 rather than merely encouraged \u2014 to cap the number of parking places in residential developments without requiring detailed justification for their decisions.<\/p>\n

Officials say the initiative supports environmental objectives by promoting alternatives to car ownership, including public transit, cycling, and walking. The changes are part of a broader overhaul of national planning regulations that the government believes will help achieve its housing construction targets.<\/p>\n

Motoring organisations have voiced strong opposition to the proposals. The Alliance of British Drivers characterised the policy as evidence of mounting hostility toward vehicle owners, arguing that drivers already contribute substantial tax revenue while contending with deteriorating road conditions and insufficient parking in urban areas.<\/p>\n
