{"id":19222,"date":"2018-01-30T10:43:07","date_gmt":"2018-01-30T09:43:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk\/newsletter\/?page_id=19222"},"modified":"2020-07-08T13:56:39","modified_gmt":"2020-07-08T12:56:39","slug":"good-news-83-uks-population-uk-not-concreted","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk\/newsletter\/?page_id=19222","title":{"rendered":"Good news for 83% of the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s population &#8211; the UK has not been concreted over!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-19225 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/Barnstaple.jpg\" alt=\"View overlooking Barnstaple, North Devon\" width=\"3999\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/Barnstaple.jpg 3999w, https:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/Barnstaple-300x60.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/Barnstaple-768x154.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/Barnstaple-1024x205.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/Barnstaple-1200x240.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/>The news that <strong>the percentage of the UK land area that is densely built upon is 0.1%<\/strong> has won the title of UK Statistic of the Year, under a new initiative from the Royal Statistical Society \u00e2\u20ac\u201c from nominations made by members of the public and the organisation\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s members.<\/p>\n<p>The statistic comes from a report by Professor Alasdair Rae, of the University of Sheffield\u00c2\u00a0<em>A Land Cover Atlas of the United Kingdom<\/em> which was published in November 2017 using Corine Land Cover data from 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The 0.1% of land areas considered to be CUF (made up of \u00e2\u20ac\u02dccontinuous urban fabric\u00e2\u20ac\u2122) are those that are most densely populated &#8211; where at least 80% of ground is impermeable and comprises buildings, roads and other artificial surfaces.\u00c2\u00a0 The alternative DUF (\u00e2\u20ac\u02dcdiscontinuous urban fabric\u00e2\u20ac\u2122) accounts for just over 5.3%, and in fact only 5.4% of UK land is considered \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcurban\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 at all.<\/p>\n<p>Pasture land (28.7%) and non-irrigated arable land (27%) accounts for most of the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s landscape, while peat bogs (9.4%), moors and heathland (7.5%), natural grassland (5.8%), coniferous forest (5.1%) and broadleaf forest (2.1%) make up between them nearly a third of the landmass.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-19227 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/uk_corine_2012_bargend_v3_300dpi.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2488\" height=\"1984\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/uk_corine_2012_bargend_v3_300dpi.jpg 2488w, https:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/uk_corine_2012_bargend_v3_300dpi-300x239.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/uk_corine_2012_bargend_v3_300dpi-768x612.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/uk_corine_2012_bargend_v3_300dpi-1024x817.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/uk_corine_2012_bargend_v3_300dpi-1200x957.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The report reveals the UK local authority areas with the highest percentage of each land cover class. In London, the City of London has the highest percentage of CUF (97.6%) and Lewisham the highest percentage of DUF (87%).\u00c2\u00a0 Westminster has most land classified as \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcgreen urban\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 (21.1%) largely because of its royal parks.\u00c2\u00a0 Richmond upon Thames is classified as nearly 41% \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcsport and leisure\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 (golf clubs).
