{"id":19108,"date":"2017-12-14T13:57:27","date_gmt":"2017-12-14T12:57:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk\/newsletter\/?page_id=19108"},"modified":"2020-07-08T15:39:50","modified_gmt":"2020-07-08T14:39:50","slug":"common-sense-prevails-controversial-staircase-tax-abolished","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk\/newsletter\/?page_id=19108","title":{"rendered":"Common sense prevails as controversial Staircase Tax abolished"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Small businesses across the land will be celebrating as the Chancellor confirmed the abolition of the Staircase Tax.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2017, business owners were shocked when the Supreme Court ruled in\u00c2\u00a0Woolway v Mazars\u00c2\u00a0that revaluations of the business rate tax by the\u00c2\u00a0Valuation Office Agency would be backdated to April 2015.<\/p>\n<p>The so-called\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk\/newsletter\/?page_id=18554\">Staircase Tax<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0would have seen businesses that occupied different floors within the same property, but separated by communal spaces including staircases, corridors and lifts, paying separate business rates for each hereditament.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Hammond said in his Budget 2017 speech that he had &#8216;listened&#8217; to businesses that were affected by the contentious ruling.<\/p>\n<p>The law will now be amended to reverse the tax to show that contiguous properties (whether by exclusive access or otherwise) will now be classed as one hereditament.
