{"id":17008,"date":"2017-06-21T16:05:23","date_gmt":"2017-06-21T15:05:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk\/newsletter\/?page_id=17008"},"modified":"2018-11-21T15:34:39","modified_gmt":"2018-11-21T14:34:39","slug":"londons-no-1-poultry-awarded-grade-ii-listed-status","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk\/newsletter\/?page_id=17008","title":{"rendered":"London\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s No.1 Poultry awarded Grade II* Listed Status"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The office and retail building once voted <em>Time Out<\/em> magazine\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s fifth worst building in London, has been awarded Grade II* listed status.<\/p>\n<p>No.1 Poultry was built on the site of the Mappin &amp; Webb building, a 19th century neo-gothic listed building, which was demolished amid a fiercely fought and much publicised campaign.\u00c2\u00a0 The original replacement design was not approved of by Prince Charles who referred to it in his famous \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcmonstrous carbuncle\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 speech made at the 150th anniversary of the Royal Institute of British Architects\u00c2\u00a0in 1984. \u00c2\u00a0He said: &#8220;It would be a tragedy if the character and skyline of our capital city were to be further ruined and St Paul&#8217;s dwarfed by yet another giant glass stump, better suited to downtown Chicago than the City of London.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The scheme was aborted in favour of a design by James Stirling, although the Prince didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t approve of Stirling\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s design either, describing it as looking \u00e2\u20ac\u0153rather like an old 1930s wireless\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.\u00c2\u00a0 Completed in 1997, five years after the architect\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s death, it features an outer shell of bands of rose-pink and yellow limestone.\u00c2\u00a0 The front of the building is not unlike a submarine conning tower.<\/p>\n<p>The building is considered to be one of the greatest masterpieces of postmodernist style in London, and has attracted much publicity, not all of it good. \u00c2\u00a0Over the years several people, including many bankers, have chosen to take their own lives by jumping from the roof.<\/p>\n<p>On a more cheerful note, it was chosen for a starring role in the James Bond-themed film sequence for the Olympic opening ceremony, starring the Queen.\u00c2\u00a0 Diners in the building\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s roof terrace <em>Coq d\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Argent <\/em>restaurant were seen waving at a helicopter supposedly flying Her Majesty with James Bond (played by actor Daniel Craig).<\/p>\n<p>To read more on listed buildings and how they affect you,\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk\/newsletter\/?page_id=2806\">click here.<br \/>\n<\/a>For further information on VAT and listed buildings,\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk\/newsletter\/?page_id=3376\">click here.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The office and retail building once voted Time Out magazine\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s fifth worst building in London, has been awarded Grade II* listed status.
