{"id":16376,"date":"2017-03-21T11:17:19","date_gmt":"2017-03-21T11:17:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk\/newsletter\/?page_id=16376"},"modified":"2017-03-21T11:18:18","modified_gmt":"2017-03-21T11:18:18","slug":"what-could-you-buy-for-a-pound-a-house","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk\/newsletter\/?page_id=16376","title":{"rendered":"What could you buy for a pound \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 a house?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you missed our article <em>\u00e2\u20ac\u02dcReasons to be Optimistic about the Property Market\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/em>, published in March 2013 then read on.<\/p>\n<p>For just \u00c2\u00a31, and four months of renovations later, Rebecca Dennis and Chris Benn have a property worth \u00c2\u00a360,000, so how did they do it?<\/p>\n<p>The young couple from Stoke-on-Trent have purchased their two bedroom mid\u00e2\u20ac\u2018terrace home for just a \u00c2\u00a31 deposit.\u00c2\u00a0 Over the next ten years, Rebecca and Chris will repay the city council the \u00c2\u00a330,000 it has since invested in the property, when the couple will own the house.<\/p>\n<p>The city council has taken the leap to help young first time buyers purchase their first home.\u00c2\u00a0 Rebecca and Chris secured a place on the council\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Home Ownership Scheme which is being used to revitalise rundown parts of the town.<\/p>\n<p>To qualify for the scheme, residents must have a joint income of between \u00c2\u00a318,000 and \u00c2\u00a325,000 and live in the house for a minimum of five years, and one of the couple must be guaranteed employment of at least 16 hours a week.\u00c2\u00a0 Chris\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s employment as an independent contractor made him ineligible, so full-time photography student, Rebecca, has taken on extra work in a supermarket, a teddy bear shop and as a photographer\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s assistant to qualify.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We really had to fight for it,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Rebecca said, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153even though it meant me taking on my third job and upping my hours it was totally worth it.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>The average age of first time buyers is over 30, so the scheme has enabled the couple to put a foot on the ladder eight years earlier than most.<\/p>\n<p>For those who would rather start with a new home, Stoke-on-Trent has become one of 30 local authority partnerships involved in the Starter Homes Scheme created to encourage use of brownfield sites around the country.\u00c2\u00a0 First time buyers aged between 23 and 40 can buy a new property for at least 20% below market value.\u00c2\u00a0 219 new homes will be completed as part of the scheme in Stoke-on-Trent.\u00c2\u00a0 The development is being supported by the Government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Starter Homes Land Fund.<\/p>\n<p>Councillor Randy Conteh, the council\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s cabinet member for housing, communities and safer city, said: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It is fantastic news that we have been selected by the Government to spearhead this scheme, as it helps us to deliver our Stronger Together priority of investing in homes and driving up housing standards.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153The Starter Homes programme will help young people get onto the housing ladder and secure their dream homes sooner.
