{"id":15264,"date":"2016-05-18T13:34:27","date_gmt":"2016-05-18T13:34:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk\/newsletter\/?page_id=15264"},"modified":"2016-07-27T10:59:04","modified_gmt":"2016-07-27T10:59:04","slug":"squatting-becoming-criminalised-2012-not-stop-pensioner-losing-house","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.propertysurveying.co.uk\/newsletter\/?page_id=15264","title":{"rendered":"Squatting becoming criminalised in 2012 does not stop pensioner losing house!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pensioner Colin Curtis lost the rights to his mother\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s house this month, despite a change in the law in September 2012 which made squatting a criminal offence.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Curtis made a claim to take back control of the house from a Mr. Best who claimed adverse possession, having occupied the house since 1997. The house had been empty after Mr Curtis&#8217; mother died, and Mr Curtis had moved out.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Elizabeth Cooke denied Mr Curtis\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 claim as he was not the registered administrator of his mother\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s estate and thus had no right to claim.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, as a result, Mr. Curtis will not only lose his inheritance, but may well have to pay Mr Best\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s legal costs, amounting to \u00c2\u00a337,000, as well as his own.
