Andy Martin, a North London based architect has been ordered to tear down a 6ft 5 inch fence he had erected around the front garden of his property without planning permission and which led to one neighbour describing the house as a \u00e2\u20ac\u02dclittle prison\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.<\/h3>\n

Mr Martin has worked for many famous faces, including rock star Noel Gallagher and a number of fashionable restaurants, but his latest project has not gone down well with his neighbours or the local council, who have ordered him to tear it down after rejecting his application for retrospective planning permission.<\/p>\n

Asked why he had the fence built, Mr Martin explains:<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u02dcWe had some problems with someone being chased into our house late at night, and it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s put my young children in a situation where they are quite nervous now\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6<\/em>It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s really helped for them. It gives us a lot more security\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

As well as supposedly increasing security, Mr Martin believes the fence is a thing of beauty and that if more neighbours followed his lead, the area would be improved. He says:<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153In my opinion that street is a little bit of a disaster\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6It feels like a car park \u00e2\u20ac\u201c people pour concrete in their front yards. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not a great example of streetscape.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

His neighbours, perhaps unsurprisingly, disagree, with one describing it \u00e2\u20ac\u0153like a little prison not, a house<\/em>\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

Dilip Hirani, another outraged neighbour describes the barricade as an \u00e2\u20ac\u02dceyesore\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 and goes on to explain:<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know what they are protecting\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6.They must be running around naked or something.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/em><\/p>\n

It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not only the neighbours that disapprove and Brent Council, who rejected the retrospective application in which Mr Martin had described the fence as \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcmodest<\/em>\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 and \u00e2\u20ac\u02dca neat design<\/em>\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 which \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcimproves the front forecourt area\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/em> described it as having a \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcsignificantly unacceptable visual impact\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
