Battle

The town and civil parish of Battle lies on the site of the 1066 Battle of Hastings. Battle Abbey was built to commemorates the battle, and the town grew up around it. Battle lies in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and there are three Sites of Special Scientific Interest within the parish: Blackhorse Quarry, Hemingfold Meadow and Darwell Wood.

Daniel Defoe said in 1722 that Battle produced the finest gunpowder in Europe. The remains of one gunpowder works building is now a hotel on the appropriately named Powdermill Lane.

The cottages and houses nearest the Abbey date from 1700, and there are some impressive Georgian buildings along Battle High Street. The parish church of St Mary was built in the 12th Century. One of the oldest buildings in the town is the Almonry which was built in 1090 and is now the home of the Town Council and Battle Museum of Local History.
