Teignmouth is a popular tourist fishing village on the River Teign, but was a significant Devon port in the 14th century. In the time of the Saxons, there were two villages - East and West Teignmouth - separated by a stream called the Tame. Over time, the two villages merged and the Tame has been diverted under the town in a culvert. In the 1820's a bridge was built across the estuary to Shaldon - at the time it was the longest wooden bridge in England. Some years later, Teignmouth Railway Station was built, and Teignmouth Pier was constructed later in that century.
Teignmouth is home to one of the oldest regattas in England, which dates back to at least 1817 with nine days of water-borne activities and merriment each August - leading some to say Teignmouth is “a quaint English drinking village, with a fishing problem”.
